چکیده

Visual navigation of mobile robots has become a core capability that enables many interesting applications from planetary exploration to self-driving cars. While systems built on passive cameras have been shown to be robust in well-lit scenes, they cannot handle the range of conditions associated with a full diurnal cycle. Lidar, which is fairly invariant to ambient lighting conditions, offers one possible remedy to this problem. In this paper, we describe a visual navigation pipeline that exploits lidar’s ability to measure both range and intensity (a.k.a., reflectance) information. In particular, we use lidar intensity images (from a scanninglaser rangefinder) to carry out tasks such as visual odometry (VO) and visual teach and repeat (VT&R) in realtime, from full-light to full-dark conditions. This lighting invariance comes at the price of coping with motion distortion, owing to the scanning-while-moving nature of laser-based imagers. We present our results and lessons learned from the last few years of research in this area.

The effect of light-dark cycle alteration on thermal and chemical pain in the male rat

Background: Animals have an internal biological clock with melatonin hormone that helps them to adapt to light/dark circles. Since melatonin is associated with an alteration in the expression and production of opioid receptors, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of changes in the light/dark circles on pain sensation in rats. Methods: This research study in order to investigate the thermal...

بررسی اثر افزایش مدت زمان تاریکی چرخه روشنایی– تاریکی بر سطح سرمی T3، T4 و TSH در موش صحرایی نر

Background and Objective: Studies have shown that alteration in photoperiod influences secretion of many hormones. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different periods of darkness on serum level of T3, T4 and TSH in male rats.   Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control group (exposed to 12 h light-12 ...

Effect of different photoperiods on the growth and survival of juvenile of Indian major carp, Catla catla

The experiment was conducted to determine the effects of different photoperiods and darkness on the growth and survival of juvenile Catla catla in the laboratory for 90 days. Fishes were divided into four aquaria (10 fish per aquarium), and subjected to different photoperiod regimes of 8 hours light: 16 hours dark (8L:16D), 16 hours light: 8 hours dark (16L:8D), continuous light (24L:0D) and co...

The Value of Darkness: A Moral Framework for Urban Nighttime Lighting

The adverse effects of artificial nighttime lighting, known as light pollution, are emerging as an important environmental issue. To address these effects, current scientific research focuses mainly on identifying what is bad or undesirable about certain types and uses of lighting at night. This paper adopts a value-sensitive approach, focusing instead on what is good about darkness at night. I...

Genome-wide identification of touch- and darkness-regulated Arabidopsis genes: a focus on calmodulin-like and XTH genes.

We sought to gain insight into functions potentially altered by mechanostimulation and investigate the relationship between touch and darkness responses. Microarrays and quantitative RT-PCR were conducted to identify genes and analyze behaviors of calmodulin-like (CML) and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase (XTH) genes. Strikingly, 589 genes had touch-inducible expression; 171 had reduce...
